Dr. Froggi VanRiper (she/they) joined the Environmental Studies program in 2022.  She is a systems scholar, working on questions of sustainability at the intersection of social, environmental and technical systems.

As faculty in the Environmental Studies Program at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. VanRiper teaches undergraduate courses in ecological economics, sustainability, and community-based conservation, and mentors undergraduate student research. Froggi also co-directs the Sustainability Exchange, a student practicum experience.

Froggi is an active member of the movement to reshape the nature of research collaboration between communities in the Global North and Global South towards equitable distribution of beneficial outcomes.  This work includes striving for co-creation, and leveraging the resources of the academy to elevate recognition of traditional and situated knowledges.

Froggi’s research explores sustainability challenges in sanitation, including appropriate technologies and systems for environmentally and economically fragile communities.  Froggi is driven by interest in how social, environmental, and technical systems interact to affect the sustainability of public infrastructure and the wellbeing of vulnerable populations.
