Introduction to Environmental Biology

Introduction to Environmental Biology is designed to teach fundamental principles of environmental biology including ecosystem structure, community and species ecology and population biology. The topics are interwoven with examples of current environmental challenges and are illustrated by on-going research, including contributions from WashU students and faculty. Topics include the effects of climate change on biological life, the consequences of habitat fragmentation, energy, pollution, agriculture, and urban ecology. This is an introductory course designed for first and second year students, although students of all years are welcome. Class must be taken for a letter grade. Goals: 1). To understand the fundamentals of environmental biology; 2) To understand how these fundamental principles apply to current environmental challenges 3) explore the environmental effects of urban and agricultural environments.
